While seeking to maintain a standard of excellence in the choice of the various items of the Treasury, I have also endeavoured to provide for the tastes of those who prefer to recite what are called popular pieces. With this purpose in View, I have included many well-known selections. Some of the longer poems are intended primarily for reading exercises rather than for recitation.
Large as is the number of the pages of this work, I have of necessity been obliged to omit many admirable poems which I should have liked to reprint. In some few instances permission has been refused, whilst in others it has been found impossible to communicate with the respective Authors. For this latter reason, I much regret that no example of Mr. Algernon C. Swinburne's genius is included.

We have spent many happy evenings, sober and not so sober either laughing, or just listening then talking about what a selection of humorous or dramatic poems can make us imagine. If you can get some of Will Carleton's books of ballads and legends, you have all that you need for winters nights by the fire, or summers evenings on the grass on the headland above the beach. Better still! Come on over to Sawtell here on the New South Wales mid-north coast, and I'll read to you myself. All you have to do is bring a cool wine or a Coopers ale. Seriously! This is a great book and I am searching for another copy for my Mum who has sat here copying it out by hand during her holidays with us.Regards and happy times. Alan Melbourne

Oh what a find! My grandfather once had this book and my uncle and mother learned poems word for word - we never quite got through them without bursting into tears though!! What an excellent book - it is what wonderful memories are made of. Children will love the poetical stories. You must get it!
